Happy “Spring” Break! Students have been working hard and have certainly earned this break! The last two weeks have seen the culmination of several teams’ integrated units, a few big trips for students, and a variety of activities and events throughout the building.

When we return from break, we will be starting our state SBAC testing. We work hard throughout the year to teach students deeply and to make sure that they are learning the content and skills that will help them be successful later in life. These tests are one opportunity for students to show their growth through the year. Please encourage your children to try their best and help support them by making sure they are getting enough sleep at night and eating a healthy breakfast (which, we know, are both things that middle schoolers often balk at…). We are looking forward to seeing the growth and learning that students are able to demonstrate on the assessments this year!

I hope that you all have a wonderful and restful break! Enjoy!

TSA Competition
Last week 8 HMMS students traveled to the annual Technology Student Association Competition. This competition is a culmination of a year’s worth of work from the TSA after school club that is open to all students in grades 6-8. Representing HMMS this year were Chris Towne, Parrish Gelhar-Pacht, Everett Winslow, Derik Dickinson, Connor Rice, Ethan Jeon, Sebastian Fraser, and Anna McSherry. Several HMMS students placed in various competitions over the two day event. Anna McSherry placed SECOND and Sebastian Fraser placed FIRST in the dragster competition. Ethan Jeon placed THIRD in the flight challenge. We are very proud of all of the HMMS students who participated!

HACTC Summer Tech Camp Registration Open!
The HACTC has finalized the dates and info for the 2019 HACTC Summer Tech Camp. It will be held June 17-21, 2019. We hope to see a lot of HMMS students here at the HACTC for camp again this year! Please see this flier for details and registration information!

HMMS First Annual Clothing Swap
We all know how quickly middle school students grow out of their clothing. HMMS is hosting our first (hopefully annual) clothing swap on Friday April 26th. The swap will be free for all HMMS students. We are accepting clothing in good condition and will wash donations prior to the swap. Please bring all donations to Ms. Cole by Wednesday April 24th. Check out this flier for more details.

Model UN
During the last weekend in March, 11 HMMS students representing grades 6-8 attended the world's largest middle school Model United Nations conference in New York City! The conference was organized by the Lebanese American University, which brought together students from all over the world to simulate diplomacy and problem solve real issues facing the United Nations. The delegates from Hartford represented the country of Afghanistan and assisted in passing resolutions that, for the first time ever, will be published in a book of resolutions written by middle school students and disseminated to actual UN delegates. This was an amazing opportunity for our students to meet delegates from every continent, practice collaborating, and put their problem solving skills to use!

Would your children and teens enjoy the opportunity to improve their swimming and be part of a fun, summer, outdoor swim team? If so, please let us know! If there are enough families interested, Storrs Pond Recreation Area in cooperation with The Norwich Recreation Department would like to offer a swim team for area youth.

The team will be a multi-skill-level group serving ages 6-18. We will practice at the lap pool at Storrs Pond in Hanover, and will be part of the Vermont Swim Association (VSA). The team will focus on safety, fun, teamwork, fitness, and building competitive swimming skills. The season will run for seven weeks from mid-June through the first weekend in August and practices will be most weekday mornings from 8:00am-9:00am and occasional evenings. It is ok to miss practices or part of the season due to camps, vacations or other summer plans. Meets are at pools in the central and southern Vermont region.

The team will have beginner through advanced groups. This is not a "learn-to-swim" program. To be on the team, your swimmer must, at minimum, be able to enter the pool on his/her own without assistance from a parent, swim with his/her face in the water, and swim 25 yards (one length of the pool) unassisted, using a reasonable version of the Freestyle ("crawl") stroke. Swimmers new to competitive swimming as well as those with many years of experience are welcome.

If you think this team might be a good fit for your family and would like more information, please email Alexa Manning at We can only offer swim team this summer if we have enough interest, so please let us know as soon as possible. Thank you!
