This week all of our elementary schools brought their 5th grade students to visit HMMS. Students got a tour of the building and then met in the library with a panel of 6th grade students who spent about forty-five minutes answering their questions about HMMS. The incoming 6th graders were bundles of excitement, nerves, and anticipation, and it was so exciting to welcome them into the building.

This was contrasted by advisory on Friday morning when we pulled all of the 8th graders together to talk to them about grad dance and 8th grade trip (they need to send in $5 for Storr’s Pond by next Friday), and for them to nominate the 8th grade speaker for graduation. Like with our incoming 6th graders, there was excitement and anticipation (and even some nerves), but there was also a new confidence and maturity that has emerged from them over the last three years. Sitting in front of us this morning was the new high school freshman class, which was equally exciting to see. Add to that, the overwhelming height of many of this year’s 8th grade class and it was quite a duality to observe.

This weekend, our incoming 6th graders will get their middle school placement letters. DBS and OQS students will take home their letters at the end of the day today, and WRS letters were mailed out yesterday to arrive in the mail today due to a school-wide field trip that would have meant kids wouldn’t get their letters until Tuesday. There will be more excitement and nervousness as kids learn their team for the next three years. But as one student pointed out in the panel today, “All of the teams here are good teams. It sounds cliche but you make friends wherever you are, and after a couple weeks you can’t even imagine being on another team, because they’re like your family.” We look forward to welcoming our new family members next year!

8th Grade Grad Dance

The 8th grade Grad Dance is fast approaching on June 1st!  The Grad Dance is a special night for HMMS 8th graders. It is a semi-formal dance, held from 7-9:30pm at the middle school--we have generally seen students wearing short/tea-length dresses or shirt and tie with shorts.  From 7-7:30, students and families are invited to come and take pictures (outside hopefully if the weather cooperates), then the dance happens from 7:30-9:30.  Admission is free and snacks are provided. Normal school dance rules apply and students are expected to stay for the whole time or be picked up by a parent. Please arrive promptly at 9:30 to pick up your 8th grader. The Grad Dance is one of the highlights of the year--we love seeing all our 8th graders dressed up and looking so grown up!  Looking forward to seeing you all!
