Student Assistant Program

substance free

There are updated signs around the school property indicating that alcohol, tobacco products (including vapes), and cannabis are not allowed on school property, this includes at after school events and sports.  If you or someone you know is struggling with substance misuse, or you have further questions, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Potter at potterj@hartfordschools.net or by calling 802-295-8640 ext 3306.

As the school year starts, teens who are interested in quitting tobacco have several FREE and CONFIDENTIAL options for support in reducing or eliminating their use of substances:

  • My Life My Quit is a free and confidential text and chat support for youth ages 12-17 who want to quit smoking or vaping. Youth can text START to 36072 to chat with a Coach. There are also free resources for parents/guardians and educators on the My Life My Quit website.
  • American Lung Association online tobacco self-paced cessation eight (8) virtual sessions go to https://notforme.org/
  • Smokefree Teen is part of the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI). They offer free tools that meet teens where they are—on their mobile phones. The text messaging program can help teens quit smoking/vaping and the quitSTART app helps by providing helpful strategies for tackling situations where they may be tempted to vape.
  • Mrs. Potter will be offering a “NOT” (Not on Tobacco) group weekly during enrichment/recess/lunch times for youth who are interested in making better choices.
  • Mrs. Potter can also make referrals to providers in the community, including Second Growth program that has a weekly teen substance misuse group.  Please reach out to Mrs. Potter for more information on any of the programs or other support you may need by emailing potterj@hartfordschools.net

All Hartford School District students are taught about the dangers of drugs and alcohol on developing brains in the health classes (for middle and high school), and by their school counselor in elementary schools.  All students and families have access to a Student Assistance Provider (SAP).

Would you like to learn more about the prevention efforts within the Hartford community? Curious about the curriculum that your students are learning about?  Perhaps you would like to learn more, reteach some lessons, or have a great dinner conversation?

Here is the Stanford curriculum that is utilized for prevention education:  tobacco prevention toolkit
